During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
