Governor Noem Visits Oregon Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility With MAGA Influencers

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the head of the Department of Homeland Security, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in the city of Portland on Tuesday. On site, she saw firsthand a small protest outside, which differs significantly to the fiery "blockade" claimed by Donald Trump.

Escorted by Conservative Influencers

Noem was accompanied by a trio of right-wing figures who were transported from the local airport to the ICE office in her motorcade. Her department has recently produced increasingly belligerent social media content featuring federal officers conducting raids and firing crowd control measures at demonstrators.

Protest Scene

Portland police cleared the street outside the ICE office in the Portland's waterfront district before the secretary’s arrival. A handful individuals, featuring one in the outfit of a bird and another as a sea creature, were held back.

Audio played loudly from a protest encampment down the street, with lyrics referencing Trump and allegations. Someone shouted to a government videographer filming from the roof, questioning whether the Department of Homeland Security had been referred to as the "propaganda department".

Media Access

Journalists from nonpartisan publications were also kept at the security perimeter outside, while the partisan influencers in Noem’s entourage—three right-wing influencers—shared digital content of the governor conducting federal personnel in a prayer session inside, offering a motivational speech, and advising a member of the militia to "Prepare".

Recent Rulings

Governor Noem has supported the former president's allegations that the small band of demonstrators—who have assembled in their small numbers outside the site since recent months, including one in an frog outfit—are "extremists" who have placed the building "in a state of siege", making the use of federal troops essential.

Yet, on Saturday, a federal judge in Oregon blocked Trump’s effort to bring under federal control Oregon’s National Guard, stating that the Trump's allegations that the mostly calm city was "being destroyed" were "untethered to the facts".

The next day, the judge, the magistrate—who was appointed to the judiciary by the former president—expanded her order to block state militia from any jurisdiction from being deployed in the city. This occurred after he reacted to her initial ruling by attempting to send members of the California National Guard to the state.

Increased Confrontations

Since Trump focused on the limited yet ongoing gathering outside the ICE facility and made unsubstantiated allegations that the city is "war ravaged", a growing number of his followers, including MAGA influencers, have arrived to face the demonstrators.

Some of these encounters have led to altercations and brawls, prompting arrests by the officers. A conservative personality was taken into custody after he tried to force his way a gathering on a walkway near the office and was part of an altercation over an national banner. He had before taken the flag from a demonstrator who was setting it on fire.

The charges against Sortor were eventually dismissed after an outcry in right-wing outlets prompted the head of the legal unit of the Justice Department, a department official, to suggest a review of the law enforcement agency over alleged partisan treatment.

Two individuals he was detained over a conflict with still have pending accusations.

Official Responses

Over the weekend, Oregon’s governor, Tina Kotek, claimed DHS agents in the site of trying to provoke the demonstrators by using excessive quantities of tear gas in a populated area and inviting conservative social media influencers to record the gathering from the top of the facility. "Their actions are meant to provoke," Kotek said.

A trio of those right-wing personalities were referred to in a law enforcement document last month as "counter-protesters" who "frequently reappear and harass the demonstrators until they are confronted or subjected to spray" and decline "frequent warnings from police to keep clear of" the demonstrators.

Online Content

One influencer, a former journalist who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from his previous employer for ethical violations, published video of Noem viewing from the upper level of the ICE facility at the limited number of individuals below, including Jack Dickinson who dons a bird outfit to mock Donald Trump. The influencer captioned the clip of the secretary inspecting the placid scene below: "Secretary Noem confronts Antifa militants and a costumed protester".

Despite the difference between the claims from both officials that this facility is "under siege" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of demonstrators in harmless costumes, the personalities with her continued to describe the demonstrators as dangerous radicals.

Official Engagement

During her visit, Noem also held a discussion with the law enforcement head, the chief, who has been depicted as "liberal" in conservative media for allowing his personnel to arrest Sortor. In a digital announcement on the engagement, Benny Johnson claimed that the official had "aligned with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then left the facility past a small group of protesters on the exterior, including one wearing a bear wearing a sombrero.
